How to Create a Mood Board
Are you getting ready to redesign your space?
Seeing big picture throughout the design process is the most important thing you can do. It will help you layout your ideas and amplify your vision for the space.
When starting a design for a room, I recommend bringing your items together BEFORE purchasing them.
How? With a mood board.
Step 1: Open Up Your Canvas
The first step in this is to open up your blank canvas. You can use photoshop or a word doc like Microsoft Word or Pages.
Pro Tip: If you use a word doc then make sure the photo is set to “tight” or “none”
Step 2: Find Your Pieces
When you’re searching for new decor, be sure to keep your theme in mind. Your theme could be a color pallet, specific finishings, or a theme like plants, moons, or the beach. Anything that really represents you and what you will enjoy coming home to.
My favorite places to look are obviously the antique stores and Goodwill! IKEA, Target and World Market also have some modern pieces to tie into the space.
All of these pieces are from IKEA
Step 3: Insert & Organize Your Board
So you’ve found your nightstand, bedding, wall art, and light fixtures. Now what? It’s time to see how their individual designs play into the overall theme of your room.
Simply drag and drop or insert them into your document.
The key to this is to set up your board similar to how your room will be. For example, a rug on the bottom, then the bed on top, nightstands on either side, lamps above them, and artwork above.
You can even style your furniture with your pillows & blankets, as I’ve done here for this bedroom.
Pro tip: you may need to crop the image in case there’s extra white space taking up too much of your canvas.
Step 4: Enjoy Your New Space!
